I know this is a long time coming...better late than never!
The birth story:
I had been desperately trying to get Blake to come the whole week before his due date but thank goodness he didn't! My mom arrived at our house on the 18th. She was just in time to help with the end of the girls bedtime routine. Afterward we took a walk around the neighborhood. We went to bed a little while later and a few minutes after midnight, my contractions started. After laboring for about 4 hours I felt like my contractions were close enough apart to call the doctor and go to the hospital.
By the time I got all checked in and hooked up to the monitors it was about 5:00 am. Unfortunately, the hospital I was at has a rule that you MUST be lying in a hospital bed, hooked up to the monitors for one hour before you can get up and move around. The contractions were SO miserable and more acute in my back while lying in the bed. Finally, they let me up for an hour. The contractions had gotten much stronger and I wasn't able to manage the pain well. I had been so determined to have a natural birth! After the contractions got so bad that I was vomiting from the intensity of the pain, I caved in and asked for an epidural. There were 3 cesarean sections scheduled that day so I was lucky to get mine when I did. Getting the epidural was awful but I was grateful for it later!
Right after I got the epidural (about 8:00 am), the doctor came in and checked me. I was dilated to 5 cm. He broke my water at 9:00 then Jaren went to the court hearing for the girls at 10:00. Finally at 3:00 in the afternoon, I was dilated enough to push. Blake was turned to the side so they spent awhile having me rotate side to side to try and get him facing down. It never worked so they just had me start pushing. They turned my epidural off so I could have more control of my pushing muscles. I pushed for 2 hours but Blake's big head was stuck behind my pelvic bone and I kept getting the chills with a touch of fever. They decided to go ahead and do a cesarean section...which I had been adamantly against! By the time they made that decision...I could feel all of the pushing sensations. It was painful and the worst feeling ever having all that pressure down there and trying to push but the baby being stuck. This was probably my post pathetic time during the whole thing. I kept begging for them to help me and give me medicine.
Eventually, they got me my medicine and all prepped for surgery. Once I was in the operating room it wasn't long before I felt a lot of serious tugging and pulling then a beautiful cry from my baby. I remember thinking what a cute cry it was. They brought him around so I could meet him and I was so happy that even with his huge cone head, he looked so adorable (to me at least)!

Proud daddy with his cute little bundle!
I sure feel blessed with our little guy! I am so grateful for modern medicine! I keep thinking "what would have happened if I couldn't push him out and there was no such thing as a cesarean section?" So glad we we're both alive and well! Recovery seemed to go ok in the hospital. I was put on antibiotics because I had gotten an infection. I kept having issues with my IV clotting or infiltrating. By the time I left, I had had 4 IVs and been poked 7 times total trying to get them in.
After coming home from the hospital things didn't go very well though. I swelled up even more which meant I didn't lose a single pound after having Blake. Instead, I gained 9 more than my weight going into the hospital while pregnant! My blood pressure went way up and I was experiencing a lot of pain in my abdomen. So only two days after coming home, I went into the doctor because of my complications. I was admitted to the hospital right away. They never told me exactly what it was but I had heard preeclampsia mentioned as a possibility. I was put on a fast and only allowed ice chips (not even water) for 24 hours. That was horrible! I went through several tests which included an MRI. It might not seem like a big deal, but when they told me I couldn't nurse Blake for 12 hours after giving me the iodine, I was devastated. I'm sure it was mostly all of those out of control hormones and emotions after having a baby but I was a wreck! Those hormone and emotions made me crazy for at least 2 weeks! After all of my tests came back normal and my blood pressure had come down some (and me begging the doctor to let me go home), I was released from the hospital the day after I was admitted. I was put on a new antibiotic for my infection. The doctor said the pain I was experiencing in my abdomen was side effects of the infection that had spread into my muscles.
Once I hit the week mark after having Blake, the swelling started to go down and I lost 35 lbs of water weight in a matter of 3 days. Adjusting to a new baby is rough and emotional and it was quite overwhelming with 3 little girls at home too. I'm so grateful for my wonderful husband and amazing mother who took care of them, the house and me...and were generally understanding when the hormones and emotions would rear they're ugly head. I was also grateful to have my sister, Kristina, there to help when mom left! I would not have transitioned well without them! Thanks to everyone who was so helpful and supportive!!
